On February 19th, 30 participants from 8 area 3 schools, earned 3 PLUs as they completed the final day of training for the Area 3 Collaborative Peer Coaching Course that began in August. Participants enjoyed 3 days of training with Stephen Barkley and they put their training into practice during the school year. Each teacher acted as a coach and each one also received coaching during their practicum.
Peer Coaching puts us in charge of our own professional growth! The teacher requesting coaching and feedback chooses the focus for a specific area of improvement. Participants also commented that coaching opens the doors to true collaboration among professionals.

Collaborative Peer Coaching is a “partnership of development and support between willing colleagues; an ongoing partnership that facilitates personal and professional growth” (Tampa Bay Educational Leadership Collaborative). Most area 3 teachers work collaboratively in grade level, horizontal and/or vertical teams. Our best intentions for continual collaboration are often thwarted by the lack of time! Our 2007-2008 course offering will attempt to reach the National Staff Development Council’s goal of embedding professional learning into the school day. Each participant will attend a three day training with Stephen Barkley, author of Quality Teaching in a Culture of Coaching. Substitutes will not be needed during the three days of training as two are in August before pre-planning and the third day is a teacher in-service day in February.
